Meanwhile 1st XI draw despite excellent Sri Lankan performances

We want to add our congratulations to the England men’s side on their magnificent World Cup victory on Sunday. An extraordinary match …with an extraordinary result. It was probably the most exciting game ever seen. It was also so important that it was shown on terrestrial TV reaching an audience of many millions. We hope it will have a real impact on our game at local level. Who knows, there might be one of our juniors today, who may end up in a similar circumstances in another 10 or 15 years time! It was a great show piece for our wonderful game.

But more locally…!

Both Claygate sides stay in the middle of their respective leagues after this weekend’s matches with the 1st XI taking a winning draw against Horley. Because of the Flower Show, both teams were away and in the season overall it’s now less games to play than played.

The 1st XI were at league leaders Horley, who won the toss and elected to field. Claygate were missing captain Jamie Henderson on holiday.

Claygate put on an excellent show with opener Sanjeewa Wijetunga choosing the moment to make his first 100 of the season, finishing on a terrific 106. He was well partnered by Tuan Hadgie (62) with the Sri Lanka pairing producing a 100 partnership. Rajndhu Rodrigo also contributed 39 not out as Claygate reached a powerful 247 for 4 from 50 overs.

In reply, Claygate always had Horley on the ropes and Tuan Hadgie also starred with the ball, taking 6 for 40 from 16 overs – his best ever performance for Claygate. However Claygate were not able to polish off the tail for the win, with the Horley lower order providing stern resistance at the end. The home side finished on 194 for 8 – Claygate taking 9 points from the winning draw.

The 2nd XI were less fortunate having struggled with holiday and Flower Show commitments to turn out a side. Playing on the Guildford City ground, Morden won the toss and elected to bowl first and that looked a good call with an early wicket for Morden. Russ Guyatt and Harry Holly battled well, before Holly went for 22. Guyatt compiled an excellent 66, but wickets continued to fall at the other end and Claygate finished on 149 all out after 49 overs.

It was a total which was always going to be difficult to defend, and despite two wickets each for Kanwal and Fernando, Claygate never had the penetration required to contest the game more closely. Morden finished on 151 for 4 from 32 overs, with 12 wides not helping. Claygate are in a lower table position.

There was no game for the Sunday side.
