Claygate Diamonds girl’s team also get their first victory

Claygate put in several excellent performances this weekend…although not necessarily in one team …or at one time!

Batting star of the weekend for Claygate 1st XI was Rodridgo Rajindhu who blasted his first ever century, a massive 146 not out and his high score for the club as part of Claygate’s impressive 257 for 9.

Putney started with a century partnership, but then Chris Howe got the breakthrough wicket and with Tuan Hadgie and Jay Harshaka shared the remainder. They restricted the home side to 223 for 8 from 46 overs giving Claygate the winning draw and adding 9 points to the season’s total. Claygate are now in mid -table position in the Fullers Brewery Surrey County League 1st XI Division 1 behind a group of clubs - separated only by 3 points.

Meanwhile the 2nd XI recorded their second win of the season this time by 49 runs against visitors Caterham with a near faultless fieldlng perfomance.

Batting first, Claygate made 189-5 from 49 overs. Damian Ross (38) again started the innings confidently backed up by Hugh Taggart (27) Russ Guyatt (28), James Macphail (31), and Ashwar Kanwal (31 not out). On a pitch with low bounce, no one dominated the bowling and Claygate opted to use their full 50 overs.

In reply, Claygate underperformed with the ball, but the fielding was brilliant and more than made up for it with several outstanding catches. Captain Steve Salmon made an extraordinary dive to catch the opening bat and 14 year old Casper de la Touche (making his adult team debut), held a brilliant catch at cover somehow reaching the ball by reversing his hands. Casper also contributed a tidy bowling spell. Wickets continued to tumble with two each for Kieran Williams and Nigel Abbott and three for Kemuel Smith in a welcome return to form. Caterham were all out for 140.

The Sunday side kept up their excellent run with victory over visitors Agricola at the Recreation Ground. Batting first, Agricola made 208-8, with Claygate wicket keeper Giles Totton having an outstanding bowling moment having taken the gloves off after the first 20 overs and then taking a ‘fifer’ - 5 for 40! Captain Mike Roberts finished on 65 not out and Scott LabacIk 61 as Claygate cruised to victory after 35 overs.

Meanwhile, last week, Claygate Diamonds - Claygate’s junior girls side - ‘sparkled’ in their first ever victory. On a lovely sunny Friday evening the Diamonds entertained a considerably more experienced side from East Molesey.

Molesey won the toss and put Claygate into bat.Isla and Milly opened the innings and quickly started to accumulate runs. Matilda and Jess followed against improved Molesey bowling but held firm. Emilia and Maya were next and nicely worked the ball around the field steadily adding runs. The final pair of Amelie F and Jess W added runs rapidly with some power hitting. Claygate finished on an excellent net score of 287.

Claygate’s bowling was tight with very few wides or no balls and very few loose deliveries. With some excellent fielding and catching, Claygate limited the visitors to 257, winning by 30 runs. Top bowlers were Isla and Jess B, although most of the girls managed a wicket. Well done girls!
