Introducing: Claygate Girls Cricket Team (Manager: Hope Dear)
The start of a new beginning for Claygate Cricket Club!
Girls cricket has taken off, beginning with 4 girls to now having 16 – and we are not stopping there! We played our first girls cricket match in July and drew. Everyone should be extremely proud of themselves, and what an achievement to go down in the history book of the Club.
All the girls have come a long way from learning to bowl overarm instead of underarm, to hitting 4’s and 6’s. You have one very proud coach and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.
In 2016 Claygate cricket club will be entering a Girls’ team into their very own league – bring on the season!
2015 Season Round Up
2015 was a very successful year with more juniors enjoying cricket at the club than ever before. Our Sunday morning Kwik Cricket was extended to children in Reception years and we entered a total of 9 teams in the West Surrey Youth Cricket League with some age groups entering into more than one league.
Below is a summary of how those teams fared.
U15s (Manager: Damian Ross)
It has been another very successful year for the U15s – running two teams, of the 12 league games played we won 6 and lost 6, so not a bad return.
At the beginning of the season we were delighted to bring on two new players – Max Lewis and Joe Campbell – and both made fantastic contributions to the team, both batting and in the field and we look forward to welcoming them back next season.
Amazingly, early in the season we lost 4 games in the last over of the match, proving that we could have finished 1st or 2nd in the main league. So our motto for next year will be “Keep calm, don’t panic!”
However we did have a fantastic win away at Effingham in the main league. Effingham came top of the league and this was the only game they lost. It was in that match that our “spin twins” – Sam Marsden and Jake Murray – literally “turned” the game for us. This was followed up by some exciting but responsible batting by Jake, Harry and Benny to win the game for Claygate.
Our prize winners this year were Harry Bathurst, technically the most sound batsman in the side and scores runs on a consistent basis. He is also a terrific opening bowler who is quick and swings the ball. It is very difficult to score runs off him and he has a better bowling average than any other bowler in the team. He has also been a very
reliable captain to the side and keeps a level head on the field.
Our batting cup went to Joe Campbell, a really competent and reliable batsman, scoring 157 runs during the season.
Our bowling prize went to Henry Maxwell, a pacy bowler who has the ability to move the ball off the wicket. For batsmen he is no fun to face. We have no doubt he will take a huge number of wickets in the future.
U14s (Manager: Nigel Abbott)
This year I have seen the team move to the next level – and by that I mean understanding not only what they need to do from an individual perspective – but moving to understanding of what’s important for the team. The match situation is so important in cricket and this requires an understanding of what you need to do at certain times in the match. This year they’ve demonstrated to me that they can do that – but still not consistently – and that’s the challenge for next season!
This year we are delighted to have welcomed Aidan van Konynenburg to the squad and I would also like to thank our captain Ben Newton for his efforts this year. Jason Walters, has also been gradually developing as our wicket keeper, having stepped up to fill those shoes the summer before last. He’s been our regular keeper since and has developed
extremely well.
Our bowling award this year went to Luke Cooper who’s bowling has got stronger and stronger as he’s grown, and he’ll be a real handful in the future. As our opening bowler he’s regularly taken wickets – and then often coming on at the end of the innings has ‘mopped up’ 2 or 3 wickets by bowling quick and straight.
Our batting cup went to Aaron White who has natural batting talent. I really like watching him bat as he’s inventive and technically very well organised.
Our award for our ‘most improved’ player went to Jude Harper who on several occasions stepped up to the mark both as a bowler and batsman and has consistently got runs at important times. His left arm medium pace has always got wickets and he has a very promising future as an all-rounder.
U13s (Manager: Russ Guyatt)
This year’s U13s ran two teams – Gladys Chitty and main league and played 14 matches split between the two leagues. The squad fared well and most of the games were close, winning almost half of them. When we were able to put together both a solid batting and bowling performance, we were extremely strong and we hold optimistic expectations for next season.
Our best batsman prize this year went to Nick Wright who scored 125 runs in 11 innings including 2 retirements.
Our best bowling prize went to Sam Haughey with 10 wickets in 9 innings including 4 wickets for 8 runs when we played East Molesey including a hat-trick for which a special award of the actual match ball mounted on a trophy was given.
Our player of the year award went to Sam Tallis for taking over the captainship and equalling the most runs and wickets taken during the season.
U12s (Manager: Dan Brown)
This year we were pleased to be joined by 4 new players in Ben Cackett, James Millar, Chris Wilkinson and later in the season, Gus Taylor. All four boys made excellent impact on the team and I am grateful to Tom Cackett (Ben’s dad) for his regular support with the scoresheet! I would also like to thank Matt Shervington for very ably captaining the team so well throughout this year.
The first was at Byfleet and having thought I had plenty of boys to play, after a couple of last minute drop outs I counted us as only 10 so managed to draft in U11 Andrew Schultz to the team to make up the numbers. After a decent innings in the field keeping Byleet to 89, our scorer pointed out that he didn’t have space to record our 12th bowler on the score sheet! After counting the heads of our boys I realised that I had indeed fielded 12 boys! Although this meant poor
Andrew couldn’t get a bat that day, we probably needed a twelfth batsman later when we were scuttled out in 15 overs for our lowest score of the season to lose the match!
Our best win of the season was undoubtedly against Esher. Through excellent bowling spells from Josh Barlow and Charlie Wolland it was down to Tom Hope to score his season best of 26 not out to see the boys home. It is down to his performance in this game that Tom was awarded the batting cup.
There were many other great moments throughout the season and many other strong performances from the other boys. Our bowling cup was awarded to Patrick Hegarty who is a player who has made a consistent contribution this year and last, especially with his bowling performances. Our best player of the season went to Chris Wilkinson who has made a significant influence with the bat, ball and also helping Matt as assistant captain.
U11 (Manager: Keith Davies)
The U11s fielded two teams in 2015 – both Gladys Chitty and in the main league.
This year was our first year in the main league and the boys played normal cricket rules for the first time, whereas our Gladys Chitty boys continued to play pairs. Next year everyone will be playing normal cricket rules as they move into U12s – very exciting!
Our best batsman prize this year went to Laurence who was the highest scorer. Jake Willard won the bowling cup as joint highest wicket taker. The other joint highest wicket taker and second highest run scorer was Callum Davies who won Player of the Year award for U11s.
It was a test season in many ways for all the boys so we didn’t focus on the league table but enjoyed the cricket and were proud of our win against Teddington who were competing with Esher for 1st place.
Next year we hope to field teams in both leagues once again.
U10 (Manager: Nigel Nelson)
The U10s made a debut into the Gladys Chitty league this year and performed brilliantly and were a credit to their team. They won in grace and lost graciously however on all occasions, really tried their hardest and performed with excellence.
Their parents are to be equally admired for their support and attending the matches and supporting their boys.
The best batsman prize went to Alex Sibal – Alex practised well and delivered some stunning performances. He was without doubt our best batsperson of the first season.
The best bowler prize went to Patrick Collins; he took the most wickets and is a very promising cricketer. He had some amazing catches and supported his colleagues.
Our all rounder winner this year was James Ogle as he supported his team mates and put the team before himself. He praised his colleagues, gave them encouragement and was a regular attender at all training sessions. His commitment was exceptional and I was very proud to have him on the team.
