Claygate CC suffered a narrow three-wicket defeat to Sunbury CC 3rd XI in Surrey Championship Division 7 West on Saturday, despite posting a competitive 231 all out from 41.2 overs after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Claygate Build Competitive Total

After electing to bat first, Claygate found themselves under pressure early as Akram Syed fell without scoring and Noah Luxman departed for just 5. Joe Lukens helped steady the innings with a patient 38 from 54 balls, striking eight boundaries.

The innings was then transformed by an excellent counter-attacking partnership led by Tom Sapsed and Matthew Proudman. Proudman produced the most explosive innings of the day for Claygate, smashing 52 from just 38 deliveries, including ten fours at a strike rate of 136.84. At the other end, Sapsed anchored the middle order superbly, finishing unbeaten on 57 from 56 balls, with ten boundaries of his own.

Support came from Ross Davies (8), while Claygate also benefited from a sizeable contribution of 24 extras as they reached 231 all out.

Sunbury's bowling attack shared the wickets around with Curt Higgins (3-43) leading the way. James Birch (2-37) and Nick Hilmy (2-41) also made important contributions.

Sunbury's Reply Built Around Outstanding Century

Chasing 232, Sunbury's innings revolved around a magnificent unbeaten knock from Chirag Dasghose, who carried his bat for 108 not out from 115 balls, striking 17 boundaries.

Claygate made regular breakthroughs and kept themselves firmly in the contest throughout the chase. Liam O'Connor was trapped lbw by Akram Syed for 10, while Aryan Mittra was dismissed for 8. The visitors continued to chip away with wickets falling at regular intervals, reducing Sunbury to 215-7 and giving themselves a genuine chance of defending their total.

However, Dasghose remained composed throughout the innings and guided Sunbury over the line, reaching the target with four balls to spare as the hosts finished on 232-7 from 43.2 overs.

Luke Webb was particularly economical, conceding only 31 runs from 8.2 overs and helping keep the pressure on Sunbury's batting line-up.

Having won the toss, Claygate elected to field first and made an immediate breakthrough when Mike Roberts removed opener A. Ince for just 1 with the score on 9.

Surrey Cryptics recovered well through a substantial second-wicket partnership, taking the score to 77 before Claygate struck again. AK claimed the wicket of T. Skeets for 40, while Kev Harrington then dismissed K. Taylor for 22 to leave the visitors on 96-3.

The innings was anchored by a superb knock of 51 from H. Durham, but Claygate continued to chip away at regular intervals.

The star of the innings with the ball was undoubtedly Mark Prickett, whose devastating spell dismantled the Surrey Cryptics middle and lower order. Prickett claimed five wickets, removing H. Durham, A. Goss, D. Grindrod, P. Gladstone and A. Leish as the visitors slipped from a strong position and lost momentum during the closing overs.

Further support came from Oscar Madley, Mike Roberts, Kev Harrington, AK and Ariv, who all contributed with a wicket apiece as Surrey Cryptics were bowled out for 237.

Mark Prickett for his outstanding 5-35, a match-defining spell that kept Claygate firmly in the contest throughout the afternoon. Alongside his heroics, Mike S's superb 96 and AK's all-round display of 61 and 1 wicket* were major highlights in a narrow eight-run defeat.

Chasing a target set by Surrey Cryptics, Claygate Sunday XI produced a determined batting display but ultimately fell short, finishing on 229-7 from their allotted overs.

The innings began brightly, with Hugh striking a fluent 35 from 35 balls, including seven boundaries, helping Claygate reach 45 before the first wicket fell. However, wickets then came at regular intervals and the visitors found themselves under pressure at 116-3 and then 126-4, needing someone to anchor the chase.

That role was taken on superbly by Mike S, who played the innings of the match for Claygate. Combining patience with controlled aggression, he scored an excellent 43, peppering the boundary and keeping the scoreboard moving. Unfortunately, having done the hard work, he fell agonisingly short of a deserved half century.

Mike R provided valuable support with 22, while Ariv contributed 27 helping rebuild after the early losses and keeping Claygate in touch with the required rate.

The momentum of the chase swung dramatically when wickets fell at crucial moments. With the score progressing from 181-5 to 198-6, Claygate lost the set batter and suddenly faced a steep task. Despite a spirited late effort from AK, who finished unbeaten on 61, the target remained just out of reach.

At the close, Claygate ended on 229-7, with AK and Mark unbeaten, leaving the side to reflect on a chase that promised much but ultimately came up short.

Claygate Women’s Softball Team remain firmly in the title race after an impressive 327-7 to 268-7 victory over Staines. With three league games remaining, Claygate know that three more wins would secure the championship and complete a remarkable season.
