1st XI secure promotion and a win for the Social side

SATURDAY 1st XI
The 1st XI have earned promotion to the 2nd Division, by a single point, following a remarkable win over Caterham CC on the weekend!

A massive congratulations to Luke Webb and the team. Also, a huge thank you to those who have helped out with umpiring, in particular Russ Guyatt who umpired 15 of our 18 games. Commiserations to Caterham who were gracious in defeat.

The top order laid a good foundation and at 101-2 we were looking to post a sizable total. Jake Murray (53) batted superbly on a track which most found difficult and we finished on 147-9 in our 45 overs.

The side weren't feeling optimistic at the break as they knew they needed to bowl Caterham out for less than 119 runs to avoid them securing enough bonus points to retain second spot.

Caterham lost a few early wickets but at 66-4 it felt like the game was slipping through our hands especially after a missed runout chance. Jefe Cervello and Akram Syed stuck to their task and 1 brought 2 and more with Caterham’s last 6 wickets falling for 23 runs.
Promotion unexpectedly secured! The side returned to the Hare & Hounds for a well-deserved celebration.

SOCIAL SIDE
Our Social XI played Actonians at the Rec on Saturday in the final match of the season. Asked to bowl as tails does sometimes fail, the oppo reached 97-8 off their 25 overs. James Mote and AJ White took three wickets apiece after some very tidy bowling, particularly from opener youngsters Ariv Singh and Oscar Madley.

Paddy Willard and Nick Beresford got us off to a comfortable start in the response, scoring 14 and 22 respectively, with returning Marc Gorrod (15*) and ‘handbrake off’ Mote (29*) bringing it home. It was the definition of village cricket at its very best/worst but a nice way to ease into the Claygate beer festival!

SUNDAY SIDE
The Sunday side were the odd team out on the weekend with a loss to Wibbadune. The matches between the sides have generally been close but this one was a slight exception with CCC losing by 50-odd runs. Ariv Singh excelled with the ball taking a 4-for while Dave “Thommo” McDonnell was extremely unlucky not to get a single wicket due to 5 dropped chances off some wonderful bowling.

Jefe Cervello (36) and Nigel Ashton (35) batted well in the response but a solid foundation by drinks was at the expense of the run rate. Our other wickets generally fell cheaply as we threw caution to the wind in our attempt to chase down the oppos 217 in 40 overs. The side weren’t helped by fading light following a painfully slow first innings which to 3.5 hours to bowl 40 overs! Ian Darke requested that all players were fined 100% of their match fee.

The side however didn’t let the loss stand in the way of a good evening and enjoyed the remainder of the wonderful weather as the curtain came down on the home games for the season.
